What is bone marrow transplant & what kind of diseases is treated from bone marrow transplant?

Bone marrow transplant (BMT) is a special therapy for patients with blood disorders. It involves mobilization of stem cells, collecting the stem cells, filtering those cells & giving them back either to the donor (the patient, Autologous Bone Marrow Transplant) or to another person (Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplant).

The following diseases are the ones that most commonly benefit from bone marrow transplant:

  • Leukemias
  • Severe aplastic anemia
  • Lymphomas
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Immune deficiency disorders
  • Thalassemia Majors

However, patients experience diseases differently, and bone marrow transplant may not be appropriate for everyone who suffers from these diseases.
