The short term side effects that may happen during breast irradiation

  • Almost everyone will experience some skin changes on chest wall or breast that can be from mild pinkness and itching to marked redness and blistering.

  • Lethargy/tiredness.
  • Possible hair loss in the treated area.
  • Dry cough.
  • Stiffness and pain in involved arm .
  • While on treatment you will be seen weekly by your doctor, who will help you to manage the side
    effects if they occur.How to avoid the severity of these reactions::
  • Wear loose fitting clothes preferably of cotton.
  • Avoid wearing bras or under garments during treatment.
  • Avoid rubbing your skin in case of itching.
  • You can take daily bath, use soft cotton towel to dry the area, gently dry by pressing the area, don’t rub.
  • Pain medicines can be used according to doctor’s advice in case of pain and discomfort.
  • Continue daily arm exercises as advised by your doctor which will prevent shiftiness and swelling of your arm.
  • Avoid using deodorants or perfumes as they can cause irritation.
  • Avoid lifting heavy weight with the involved arm (buckets, child, washing clothes etc)
    • Keep the irradiated skin dry and aerated
      Exercises after breast and axillary surgery:
  • Lift arm straight up in front of you.
  • Stop at 90 degree.
  • Do up to 10 times.
  • Can be done 2 – 3 times a day

  • Make and release the fist or squeeze and relax the soft rubber ball
  • Do up to 20 times.
  • Stand in front of a wall and with both hands slide your hands up the wall until you feel a pull
  • Hold for 5 seconds.
  • Slide your hand down the wall.
  • Stand sideways to a wall.
  • Make sure you keep your shoulders  square with the wall.
  • Walk your fingers up the wall until you feel a pull.
  • Hold for 5 seconds.
  • Slide your hand down the wall.
  • Step closer to the wall to increase the stretch
  • Bend your arm at the elbow, keeping it at your side.
  • Move your arm away from the body and then towards your body
