Pre Assessment Cochlear implants

During the cochlear implant process, a pre-implant assessment is necessary to determine whether an individual is a candidate for a cochlear transplant or not. Assessment is carried out by our consultant audiologist who is in close coordination with a multi-disciplinary team for a detailed assessment which includes Ear, Nose, & Throat (ENT) Physician/surgeon, nurse, and speech-language pathologist. The team may also involve other specialists such as an early interventionist, educational specialist, psychologist/counselor, social worker, neuropsychologist, and developmental pediatrician.

Presbycusis:

The most common type of sensorineural hearing loss is caused by the aging of the auditory system. It is generally experienced by one in 3 people, age 60 years & above, and has a gradual onset.

The most common symptoms are:

Speech of others sounds muffled or slurred

High pitch sounds, such as “s” or “h” or “th” are hard to distinguish

Conversations are difficult to follow especially in the presence of background noise

Men’s voices are easier to hear than women’s

Some sounds seem very loud and annoying

Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) may occur in one or both ears

Ototoxicity:

Some medicines can adversely affect inner ear function, cause damage to the cochlea and vestibular system and cause hearing loss and balance disorders.
