The most common type of sensorineural hearing loss is caused by aging of the auditory system. It is generally experienced by one in 3 people, age 60 years & above and has a gradual onset.

The most common symptoms are:

  • Speech of others sounds muffled or slurred
  • High pitch sounds, such as “s” or “h” or “th” are hard to distinguish
  • Conversations are difficult to follow especially in the presence of background noise
  • Men’s voices are easier to hear than women’s
  • Some sounds seem very loud and annoying
  • Tinnitus (ringing in ears) may occur in one or both ears

Some medicines can adversely affect inner ear function, cause damage to cochlea and vestibular system and cause hearing loss and balance disorders.
