Neurology (Shifa Neurosciences & Stroke Center)

The medical field of neurology deals with the study and treatment of the disorders of the nervous system. It is a nonsurgical specialty that is concerned with the diagnosis and management of the diseases associated with the central nervous system (involving the brain and spinal cord), peripheral nervous system (including the subdivisions, the autonomic and somatic nervous system) and their associated structures (i.e. blood vessels and their effector tissues).
The human nervous system is a complex and sophisticated organ system that regulates and directs all body activities. Disorders of the nervous system (stroke, multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, epilepsy, etc.) can turn out to be fatal or can leave a person impaired for life.
Shifa Neurosciences and Stroke Center provides diagnosis and comprehensive care to patients with a wide range of neurological disorders with state-of-the-art imaging modalities and treated using the latest guidelines.

Shifa Neurosciences & Stroke Center

Shifa Neurosciences and Stroke Center’s primary mission is to deliver exceptional clinical care to patients of neurological disorders. With the rapid advancement of neuro-technology and research in this time and era, new techniques and treatments are promptly being adopted by our physicians to cater to the growing necessities of patients.
Inpatient and Outpatient services are provided by highly trained and qualified neurologists, supplemented by dedicated post-graduate trainees and nursing staff to provide integrated care for the treatment and recovery of patients.
The center is credited with “pioneer status” in initiating the:

  • Treatment of a range of neurological conditions and disorders, i.e., Dementia, Stroke, Parkinson, Alzheimer’s, Epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), etc.
  • A specialized Stroke Center (24/7 Stroke Emergencies, dedicated IPD unit for specialized care of stroke patients)
  • First Dementia patient registry
  • First registry for maternal and fetal complications in pregnant epileptic women
  • Movement disorder clinic
  • Provision of the whole spectrum of stroke care from hyperacute stage at the stroke unit to chronic
  • Sleep Clinic equipped with a Sleep Lab facility offering diagnosis and treatment of a range of sleep and breathing disorders
  • A state-of-the-art Neurophysiology laboratory providing sophisticated diagnostic services for detecting a wide range of neurological disorders and conditions
  • Carotid artery stenting in collaboration with interventional cardiologists and interventional radiologists

Stroke Center:
Shifa Stroke Center provides integrated care to stroke patients by a multidisciplinary team consisting of neurologists, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, dieticians, and psychologists. Stoke center provides a comprehensive stroke care pathway, operational with hyperacute care and offering IV t-PA for hyperacute stroke. Since its inauguration in 2015, more than 100 acute ischemic stroke patients have been treated by administrating t-PA.

  • 24/7 Stroke Emergency services
  • OPD Clinics (Consultant & assessment of qualified and an experienced team of Neurologists)
  • IPD unit for specialized care of stroke patients
  • T-PA Thrombolysis (Clot dissolving treatment) for early recovery after a stroke attack
  • Dedicated multidisciplinary Neurological Rehabilitation team to look after patients in the acute stroke unit
  • Well-equipped neuro-diagnostic services

Neurophysiology Laboratory:
The Neurophysiology Laboratory provides sophisticated diagnostic services for detecting a wide range of neurological disorders and conditions. These conditions include seizure disorders, headaches, brainstem dysfunctions and other disorders affecting the nervous system.

The diagnostic testing for Neurological Conditions includes:

  • Nerve conduction studies (it is a medical diagnostic exam performed to evaluate the electrical conduction ability of the sensory and motor nerves of the body
  • Electromyography (EMG): It is a technique used to monitor the electrical activity produced by the skeletal muscles
  • Electroencephalography (EEG): The brain communicates with the body through electrical impulses. An EEG detects the electrical activity going on in the brain
  • Video EEG monitoring: It is a diagnostic technique used in patients with seizures or non-epileptic attacks
  • Sleep studies and all the types of evoked potential (somatosensory, brainstem auditory, visual) by a non-invasive, diagnostic, over-night examination

Shifa Sleep Disorder Center:
Shifa Sleep Disorder Center is a well-established treatment facility for patients suffering from sleep disorders. Our foreign qualified experts have a vast experience of providing treatment for sleep disorders ranging from common to rare, which includes:
